POST ATTENDS THE PEACE OFFICER RESEARCH ASSOCIATION OF CALIFORNIA (PORAC) CONFERENCE

POST Executive Director Robert Stresak attended the PORAC Annual Conference in Indian Wells on November 21 – 23, 2014.  Stresak spoke to 500 attendees and emphasized POST’s partnership with PORAC.  He thanked the Association for its continued support, which most recently manifested in their support of Assembly Bill 2387, changes to the Emergency Medical Standards Authority (EMSA) regulations and mental health training.  He discussed changes to EMSA Regulations, Proposition 47 changes to statewide curriculum, Mental Health legislation, the Peace Officer Job Task Analysis survey, POST PASS, the electronic certificate application process, and the updated Peace Officer Psychological Screening Manual.

He expressed the Commission’s deep gratitude for the efforts of PORAC members Joe Flannigan, Laren Leichliter, Ron Cottingham, Randy Waltz, Jim Bock, and Retired Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff Floyd Hayhurst; and welcomed Marcelo Blanco to the POST Advisory Committee.

On behalf of the Commission and POST staff, he extended warm wishes for the holiday season.

Questions about the conference may be directed to Administrative Assistant II Connie Paoli, Executive Office, at (916) 227-2803.

“GOT 5?” SURVEY SEEKS AGENCY INPUT ON FUTURE POST TRAINING VIDEOS AND LEARNING PORTAL COURSES

As part of its ongoing efforts to ensure timely and relevant multimedia training programs for California law enforcement, the Learning Technology Resources Bureau has launched a new “Got 5” online user survey.

The short survey, which is designed to be completed in less than five minutes, gives agencies a chance to shape the future of POST training videos and the POST Learning Portal.  Whether an officer, supervisor, dispatcher, or other agency employee, respondents have the opportunity to suggest future training topics for video (DVD) or self-paced courses (Portal).

The survey also asks agencies how they wish to access the DVD and Portal training programs with questions about video streaming and other technical capabilities.  The online survey was automatically emailed to all Learning Portal users in mid-November and will be advertised to all DVD-by-mail recipients with the December DVD mass mailing.  The “Got 5” survey is still available online.

Question about the survey may be directed to Director, Television Communications Center, Ron Crook, POST Learning Technology Resources Bureau, at (916) 227-3913.

ONLINE EXAM NOW AVAILABLE

In conjunction with the issuance of the POST Peace Officer Psychological Screening Manual, POST now offers an online exam that covers the guidance provided in the Manual on all phases and aspects of the psychological evaluation process, from the selection and training of screening psychologists, to procedures for reaching a suitability determination and beyond.  Successful completion of the 50-item exam provides screening psychologists with eight hours of continuing education recognized by the California Board of Psychology, and eight hours of POST continuing professional education (CPE) hours required per Commission Regulation 1955(b)(2).  To be POST-compliant, all peace officer screening psychologists must have completed six hours of POST-approved CPE by August 30, 2014.  Additional required CPE hours are based on each psychologist’s license renewal cycle.

The Manual is available for download on the POST Website.  Given its size and complexity, colored copies of the Manual can also be ordered through the FedEx DocStore.  More information about the online exam can be found on the POST Website.  Information on the CPE requirement, along with a list of POST-approved CPE courses and a list of screening psychologists and their respective CPE hours, is available by viewing the (CPE) Tracking System.

Questions about the Manual may be directed to Personnel Selection Consultant Melani Singley, Standards, Evaluation and Research Bureau, at (916) 227-4258.
