Officer Collision Statistics

May 10, 2012Subscribe to Emails

More officers are killed or suffer career-ending injuries from traffic collisions than from firearms or assaults.  The reality of this statistic is tragic enough.  Equally troubling is when a member of the community is killed or seriously injured in a law enforcement-involved collision.

This thought-provoking article concern law enforcement collisions. It looks at collision rates and drivers training in Illinois and Missouri.

Remember:

  • Unsafe speed is the leading cause of law enforcement fatal and injury collisions.
  • The faster a vehicle is driven, the more likely the driver is to lose control.
  • The majority of vehicle-related officer fatalities occur while en route to a call for service, where driving at a high rate of speed is not necessary.

Wear your seatbelt, watch your speed, and practice SAFE driving!
