"Our Dirty Little Secret"

March 10, 2015Subscribe to Emails

Law enforcement can place high demands on an officer’s time and energy, making a good night’s sleep an infrequent event. Studies have shown that when an individual is subjected to 17 – 19 hours of sleep deprivation, their performance on some tests was equivalent to, or worse than, that at a BAC of 0.05%!

Major Travis Yates writes a compelling and in-depth article on police driver fatigue and the tragic consequences associated with it. He advocates for joint responsibility on the part of the officer and the department to address it. Allowing officers to nap on-duty is one way departments are combating fatigue.  Find out more by reading Driver Fatigue: “Our Dirty Little Secret” and discover some of the responsible and innovative ways officers and agencies can address fatigue.

In addition to the article, we invite you to watch the SAFE Driving Campaign video, “Did You Know? Fatigue” for more information on the effects of fatigue.
