Course Description

This is an 6 CE hour workshop for experienced and POST approved psychologists. The workshop will allow the licensed psychologist to complete the required training to conduct psychological pre-employment screenings for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. The purpose of this one-day, 8-hour workshop is to help experienced POST approved psychologists to assist in the selection process for Correctional Officers in the hiring process. The psychologist will learn the ten POST dimensions, relevant laws and regulations as they relate to hiring and selection process for peace officer and Correctional officers applicants, and how to integrate various sources of information into a coherent report structure. The course will provide an overview of the MMPI-2 and 16PF as they relate to law enforcement selection process, and how to effectively summarize and support the psychologist’s determination of suitability or unsuitability of the applicants. Upon completion of this workshop, the attending psychologist will have a better understanding of what mental health, alcohol consumption, PTSD, and other relevant psychological factors contribute to the psychological pre-employment report and how to effectively assess and screen for mental health issues that may impact occupational success for Correctional and Law Enforcement personnel.

Course Objectives

Discuss CDCR’s applicant selection process of Correctional Officer applicants. Demonstrate basic understanding of Correctional Officer Job Analysis. Predict common job stressors reported by correctional officers. List Federal, State and POST laws and regulations CDCR as they relate to the selection process. Discuss how prior and current medical/psychological treatment records are reviewed and utilized for the selection process and structure of the interview. Explain how background summary report and Personal History Questionnaires are utilized in PSP. Demonstrate how to follow the semi-structured interview process required by CDCR. Demonstrate how to write a basic psychological report for CDCR incorporating the ten POST Dimensions.
