Course Description

This seminar will review the broader field of Police and Public Safety Psychology (PPSP), addressing the core competencies that identify PPSP as a unique specialty within professional psychology. Broad focus will be given to activities across all four domains of specialty practice: assessment, intervention, operational consultation, and organizational consulting. Specific focus will be given to foundational knowledge, including information about the nature, structure and culture of police and public safety work that place this population in a position of special need.

Course Objectives

Participants will be able to: Describe no less than two common activities in each of the four domains of specialty practice in police and public safety psychology; Explain the nature, structure and culture common to police and public safety work and how this imbues it with special needs served by the police and public safety specialty; Discuss how the core functional competencies within each of the four domains of specialty practice are acquired and maintained.
