CPT Credit: 2 Hours
Description: The course is for public safety instructors
who teach courses in law enforcement, fire, and emergency medical
services. The student becomes the instructor in a class and has
to make decisions for dealing with difficult students, deciding
when to use small groups, and selecting the best way to present
material. One experiences the results of decisions and learns why
it is important to get to know students, help them learn from one
another, and determine when to use various teaching methods and
aids.
Organization
Welcome to the Class: This is an introduction to the course
that explains the instructional principles being emphasized. It
also explains how to navigate through the course, call up the mentor,
and access the Facilitators Guide. These instructions can
be printed for reference.
Simulation: A class on Critical Incident Management (CIM)
is used to depict various facilitation skills needed by any instructor,
regardless of the subject.
Facilitator’s Guide: The student can branch to the Facilitator’s
Guide for useful information and tips at any time. It is divided
into five parts: Instructor Skills, Know Your Audience, Teaching
Methods, Teaching Aids, and Facilitation Skills. It has various
exercises to assist in learning the material and can be printed.
A student can do the simulation first, work through the Facilitator’s
Guide first, or consult the guide while in the simulation.
Scoring:
The final score is reported in "Your Results," which displays
a "Pass" or "Needs Improvement" indicator based
on the student’s decisions in each section of the simulation. Students
are encouraged to explore the different choices in the simulation;
when a correct choice is made, an incorrect choice made later will
not remove the recorded "pass".
Features:
Mentor: Gives hints specific to the decisions a student
must make.
