PC 832 Arrest and Firearms Testing

Peace officers qualified under California Penal Code Section 832 (PC 832) have limited peace officer powers. Examples of the types of PC 832 peace officers are airport police and certain custody deputies.

To qualify as a peace officer under PC 832, individuals must complete a POST-certified PC 832 Course, which consists of an Arrest component and a Firearms component. The specific Learning Domains (areas of instruction) are identified in the PC 832 training specifications.

There are three examinations required for this course. First, the POST PC 832 Arrest Written Test is a multiple-choice test on the laws of arrest and related topics. Second, the POST Arrest Methods Skills Test assesses such skills as defensive foot movements, takedown tactics, control holds, and handcuffing. Third, the POST Firearms Skills Test requires the student to shoot a course of fire as well as demonstrate weapon familiarization, safe weapon handling and cleaning, and good marksmanship principles. These tests are graded on a pass/fail basis. One retest is allowed within 90 days of the initial written examination. Generally, skills retests are administered immediately following the initial test.

Questions about PC 832 Testing may be directed to the Standards and Evaluation Bureau at 916.227.4820.
