Finalist, 1999 James Q. Wilson Award for
Excellence in Community Policing
To be successful, Community Policing efforts must be tailored to
the community. A multifaceted approach incorporating both outreach
and enforcement must be integrated into the dynamics of individual
neighborhoods.
Problem solving is at the core of the Pasadena Police Department's
mission, as is best evidenced by its commitment to the Service Area
approach to patrol operations. Through the empowerment of individual
Service Area Commanders and the division-wide emphasis on problem
solving, Pasadena Police Department officers are better able to
identify and resolve the issues impacting specific neighborhoods.
Partnership with the Community is evidenced in a host of areas,
including the Youth Accountability Board and the Citizens Police
Academy.
Partnership with Public and Private Organizations/Agencies is illustrated
by a number of efforts, including the CLEAR Program.
Community Policing is a cornerstone of the department's operating
philosophy and is ingrained in its Mission, Vision and Value statements.
Pasadena recognizes that Community Policing is not a program, but
rather a philosophy designed to transcend traditional barriers and
to foster relationships.
