POST Honors Law Enforcement Officers Killed in the Line of Duty

The death of a peace officer in-the-line-of-duty is a tragic consequence. POST staff has examined the circumstances that have led to every accidental death or felonious murder of a California peace officer since 1980. The published results, completed every five years, can be found in the POST publication California Law Enforcement Officers Killed and Assaulted in the Line of Duty (LEOKA). The most recent published version covers the period from 2000-2004 and is available on the POST Learning Portal.

LEOKA Memorial

This painting by Joyce DeVore was commissioned by POST in 1996.
It is prominently displayed at POST to promote the Peace Officer Memorial and
serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made by California law enforcement.

POST also actively supports the purpose, mission, and function of the California Police Memorial Foundation (CPMF). The Foundation is responsible for organizing and facilitating the annual California Peace Officers' Memorial Ceremony held every May. The Foundation brings families of all California law enforcement officers killed each year to Sacramento so that they are present to see the name of their family member or colleague added to the Memorial Monument.

Peace Officers

POST encourages its staff to attend the annual California Peace Officer's Memorial each year and has a policy that a representative from POST attend every funeral for law enforcement deaths which occurred while in the line of duty.
