The Computer Services Bureau (CSB) performs tasks involving computer
systems development, maintenance, and training in supporting POST's
mission to serve California law enforcement. CSB consists of the
Applications Development Unit, the Network and PC Support Unit and
the POST Website Unit. The bureau's staff of eleven computer professionals
manages POST's computers, programs, network, website, and centralized
Peace Officer Database. The staff researches computer hardware and
software for possible purchase and troubleshoots internal problems
through a technical help desk. CSB also serves as POST's liaison
to the State of California's control agencies regarding information
technology.
Applications Development Unit
The Applications Development Unit provides systems development and
maintenance for the functions of the Commission and staff. From
the small scanner applications to the state-of-the-art web-based
Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) System, applications
development analysts and programmers provide analysis, design, programming,
and testing services for optimum utilization of computer resources.
The effective administration of the POST Database is a critical
component of POST's enterprise. The growing EDI System allows agencies
to transmit information to POST via the Internet. Applications Development
staff provides system development services for incorporating new
mandates or strategic plan objectives, such as the current project
to improve the course certification process.
Network and PC Support Unit
The Networking and PC support unit has functions that best fit into
two broad categories: network management and user development. With
regard to network management, the unit is responsible for the entire
lifecycle of hardware-from purchasing and setup, to support and
surplusing. In addition to hardware, software is purchased, loaded
and configured; licenses are monitored; the latest software versions
are updated in an ongoing effort to maintain the equipment at peak
performance levels. In order to help POST personnel leverage the
power of their PC's, this unit maintains a technical help desk to
answer questions and troubleshoot problems. Additionally, an in-house
classroom has been set up to train staff in various software applications.
POST Website Unit
The POST Website Unit provides services to help develop and maintain
Commission information on selection and training standards, instructional
technologies, leadership development, specialty training courses,
publications, newsletters and frequently asked questions. This unit
also provides the monthly updates of the POST
Certified Course Catalog and the related training schedule.
