Tactical Medicine Course
On February 19, 2008 Emergency Medical Services Authority (EMSA) Interim Director Dan Smiley, POST Special Consultant Ken Whitman, and International School of Tactical Medicine (ISTM) Director Lawrence Heiskell, M.D. delivered presentations on the POST/EMSA Tactical Medicine Project at TREXPO West 2008 in Long Beach.
The Tactical Medicine Conference has been presented as part of TREXPO since 2006 and over 100 participants attended this year’s conference to hear a variety of presentations geared for tactical medical providers and team members.
POST and EMSA have been working together on the Tactical Medicine project since November 2006. The 80-hour Tactical Medical Course has been developed and certified to the Palm Springs Police Department & International School of Tactical Medicine (ISTM). The course has also been approved by EMSA and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). It is the only tactical medicine course in the nation that has DHS approval which enables departments to use their homeland security or urban area security initiative funding to pay for tuition, travel and per diem for their attendees.
The presentation detailed the scope of the Tactical Medicine Project and outlined the steps and timetable for completion and presentation to both the POST and EMSA Commissions later this year. The presentation detailed the goals and objectives of the project, highlighted the development of tactical medicine core competencies, and outlined the four phases that are part of the overall project.
After the presentation many of the participants asked for copies of the PowerPoint presentations. The two presentations may be accessed and downloaded from the following links:
