Course Description
This course provides the information necessary for
a trained law enforcement student investigator to be
able to conduct vehicle theft investigations.
The student investigator will be given the information
necessary to determine whether a vehicle has been VIN
switched, obtain the identification of vehicles with
all numbers removed, and obtain an understanding of
watercraft investigations.
This course will also include the investigation of
vehicle theft by fraud, thefts of construction equipment,
and thefts of a variety of other topics. This will include
the basic techniques, the resources used, and the steps
necessary to obtain a search warrant regarding vehicle
theft investigations.
Also covered will be interpretation of the laws and
case laws and the process necessary to complete a criminal
investigation involving vehicle theft.

At the conclusion of the course learners will be able
to:
- Understand the role and responsibilities of the
vehicle theft investigator
- Utilize other vehicle theft investigators' techniques
and contacts by use of networking
- Determine whether a vehicle has been VIN switched,
stolen from a car dealership, or other means
- Use effectively, outside groups such as financial
corporations, vehicle dealerships, NICB, insurance
companies, and vehicle theft experts in developing
their cases and court presentations.
