The POST Guidelines on Adult/Adolescent Sexual Assault Investigation are organized in a format that presents sexual assault investigation as a systematic process. The very personal and immediate nature of sexual assault demands that responding dispatchers, officers, and detectives develop the skills to investigate these cases and the sensitivity to provide the support that victims need to endure the criminal justice process. Additionally, the investigation must determine the facts and protect the legal rights of all parties.

These guidelines update best practices for agencies to follow when conducting sexual assault investigations.
